President-elect Donald Trump has announced the nomination of former Wisconsin Representative and Fox Business News host Sean Duffy as his pick for U.S. Transportation Secretary.
If confirmed, Duffy will oversee the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), which manages policies related to aviation, automotive, rail, transit, and other transportation sectors. With an annual budget of approximately $110 billion and substantial funding from the Biden administration’s $1 trillion infrastructure law passed in 2021, which includes investments in electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, Duffy will be stepping into a vital role.
Duffy’s nomination comes as President-elect Trump has made it clear that he intends to reverse several key policies from the Biden administration, particularly vehicle emissions regulations. The Biden administration has implemented rules to reduce tailpipe emissions by 50% by 2032 and encourage automakers to produce more EVs, but the Trump administration plans to dismantle these regulations. As part of his platform, Trump has promised to usher in a new “golden age” of transportation, with Duffy playing a key role in shaping the future of U.S. transportation policy.
One of Duffy’s most immediate challenges will be addressing the rise in traffic fatalities, which have decreased slightly this year but remain well above pre-COVID levels. Current rates exceed those of any year since 2008. Additionally, Duffy will be under pressure to ease regulations for self-driving cars, particularly in light of advocacy from companies like Tesla.
In his role, Duffy will also oversee the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), including ongoing safety concerns at Boeing. The FAA has implemented strict production caps on the 737 MAX following safety issues earlier this year, and Duffy will need to address the continuation of these measures. Furthermore, he will decide whether to continue the Biden administration’s push for aviation passenger rights and consider approving new airline joint ventures.
Duffy will also have to navigate significant regulatory matters involving companies run by Elon Musk, such as Tesla and SpaceX. USDOT is currently investigating Tesla’s Autopilot system, while the FAA is proposing a fine for SpaceX’s violations of space licensing rules.
Another key issue will be addressing the nation’s air traffic controller shortage, which has caused flight delays and raised safety concerns, as well as potential rail safety reforms, particularly following the February 2023 Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. Duffy will also oversee billions of dollars in funding for high-speed rail and Amtrak projects as part of his broader transportation agenda.
In response to his nomination, former Uber executive Emil Michael, who had been in contention for the position, congratulated Duffy, calling it an “honor of a lifetime” to have been considered for the role.
