Tesla recalls over 1 million vehicles for faulty window issue

Tesla is recalling nearly 1.1 million U.S. vehicles due to an automatic window reversing software issue. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automatic reversal system may not react correctly after detecting an obstruction, which could result in injury.

The NHTSA said the automatic windows might exert excessive force by pinching a driver or passenger before retracting and said the vehicles failed to comply with requirements of a federal motor vehicle safety standard for power windows.

The recall covers some vehicles from the following models:

— 2017-2022 Model 3
— 2020-2021 Model Y
— 2021-2022 Model S and Model X

Tesla said it was unaware of any warranty claims, field reports, crashes, injuries, or deaths related to the recall. The company said they discovered the issue during product testing in August when employees identified automatic reversal system performance that had “greater than expected variations in response to pinch detection.” After testing, Tesla found that the results did not meet automatic reversal systems requirements.

Tesla informed the NHTSA that it would perform an over-the-air software update to correct the issue. The company said that starting September 13, vehicles in production and pre-delivery received a software update to set power window operation to the requirements.
