It’s no secret that Tesla has been having difficulty meeting the production and delivery demands for its Model 3 customer reservations, which prompted industry experts to question Tesla’s longevity earlier these year.
While the production crisis appears to be under control for the time being, some customers have received new notifications that the delivery of their car has been delayed indefinitely. This revelation does not bode well for the company which is still trying to gain momentum and become a mainstream retailer. Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk is well aware of the dilemma tweeting out last week, “Sorry, we’ve gone from production hell to delivery logistics hell, but this problem is far more tractable. We’re making rapid progress. Should be solved shortly.”
In a bid to improve these delivery logistics, and set record-breaking sales for its Model 3 in the few remaining days of its third quarter, Tesla launches its latest initiative, Tesla Direct. This unprecedented move is a door-to-door direct delivery service that is free through this weekend, and will likely be extended into next week.
According to an email recovered by electrek, Los Angeles based Tesla delivery manager, Jeremy Pomp sent out this to customers:
“I am helping hand deliver your Tesla Model 3 in the LA Metro area. This door-to-door service is called Tesla Direct. This Saturday and Sunday we are offering free Tesla Direct service to your home or office. This is an exciting opportunity to get your hands on your car sooner and without having to go pick it up. A Tesla Customer Experience Professional will drive your car to your home or office.”
With the option to have your new Model 3 delivered personally by a Tesla employee, Musk hopes to eliminate congestion at Tesla’s delivery service centers and move their electric vehicles in a more efficient way. He also hopes that this delivery incentive will encourage consumers to purchase Model 3s as soon as possible in order to take advantage of the convenient delivery option.
It’s undeniable that this service is convenient, but it is really more efficient? Hoards of Tesla staff are now being taken away from the showroom and potential sales to make deliveries. Only time will tell if Musk intends to make this service a permanent addition to Tesla business operations.
