Stellantis has unveiled its new STLA Frame platform, a BEV-native multi-energy foundation designed for full-size body-on-frame pickup trucks and SUVs. This platform is central to Stellantis’ strategy to address the increasing demand for robust vehicles in North America and select global markets.Â
The STLA Frame is engineered for exceptional performance. It offers a range of up to 690 miles with range-extender electric vehicle (REEV) technology and up to 500 miles in battery-electric vehicle (BEV) configurations. It also features a maximum towing capacity of 14,000 pounds and a payload rating of 2,700 pounds, catering to customers who prioritize capability and practicality.
In addition, the STLA Frame platform will underlie Stellantis’ upcoming full-size pickup trucks, light commercial vehicles, and SUVs, supporting various propulsion options, including BEV and REEV configurations, and future potential for hybrid, internal combustion, and hydrogen systems. The innovative REEV system combines an internal combustion engine with front and rear electric drive modules (EDMs) and an onboard generator, allowing drivers to tow heavy loads without compromising on range. This versatile design enhances the driving experience, ensuring the performance expected from rugged vehicles.
CEO Carlos Tavares expressed enthusiasm for the STLA Frame, emphasizing its “no compromise” solutions for customers reluctant to switch to EVs. He highlighted the upcoming product launches for the Jeep and Ram brands as pivotal to Stellantis’ broader electrification strategy. The platform’s construction utilizes advanced, high-strength steel to enhance durability while reducing weight, ultimately boosting efficiency and performance.
Further, the automaker is prioritizing fast-charging capabilities, with the STLA Frame platform enabling 800-volt DC fast charging of up to 350 kW, allowing BEVs to gain 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. REEV configurations can achieve up to 50 miles in 10 minutes with 400-volt DC charging up to 175 kW. Additionally, bi-directional charging capabilities will allow the battery to power other electric vehicles and homes in emergencies or feed electricity back to the grid.
However, the launch of the highly anticipated all-electric Ram REV pickup, initially scheduled for late 2024, has been delayed until the first half of 2025. Tavares explained that the delay allows for thorough testing and validation to meet rigorous quality standards. He emphasized the significant workload involved in developing other upcoming electric models, including the Dodge Charger Daytona and Jeep Wagoneer S EVs, slated for release by year-end.
Nevertheless, Stellantis is launching the Ram REV as part of its strategy to enter the EV market with a range of all-new models built on the STLA Frame platform. The Ram REV delivers an impressive range of 500 miles on a single charge. In addition, the Ramcharger, a range-extended version, achieves up to 690 miles by combining electric power with a 3.6-liter V6 engine.
