On May 16, Stellantis revealed it recalls 219,000 Jeep Cherokee SUVs worldwide. The company also announced that 132,000 of those recalls occurred in the U.S. and have been identified for fire risks and electrical shorts.
The recall covers models from 2014 through 2016 equipped with a power liftgate. In addition, it’s the third recall for the issue since 2015. The electrical shortage in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.
Therefore, the automaker has warned owners to park outside until repairs are made.
The company said the power liftgate was built on a spot vulnerable to water intrusion.
According to The National Highway of Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA reported the vehicles repaired under prior recalls will still need to have the new fix performed.
The automaker said, “Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete.” Owner notification letters are anticipated to be mailed on June 30 as Stellantis continues to work on the recall fix.
The recall also covers 23,000 vehicles in Canada, 3,000 in Mexico, and 60,000 outside North America. The NHTSA said owners should follow Stellantis’ advice and park outside until the recall is developed and owners get repairs.
Stellantis has discovered 23 warranty claims, 21 field reports, and 50 assistance records that may be connected to this problem. In addition, the report said it is unaware of any mishaps or injuries that might be related to the recall problem.
