NHTSA opens investigation into Stellantis vehicles over engine shutdown issues

The preliminary evaluation aims to determine the scope, frequency, root cause, and potential consequences of this issue.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated a preliminary evaluation of approximately 150,000 Stellantis vehicles due to reports of engines shutting down unexpectedly. This investigation, announced today, targets the 2022 RAM 1500 pickup trucks and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUVs.

The NHTSA has received 80 consumer complaints detailing incidents where the vehicle’s engine would shut off, often while traveling at slow speeds. In these instances, the car would automatically shift into park mode and engage the emergency brake. Additionally, a malfunction warning light with a battery fault symbol would appear on the dashboard.

The preliminary evaluation aims to determine the scope, frequency, root cause, and potential consequences of this issue. The NHTSA’s investigation will provide crucial insights into whether a recall or other corrective measures are necessary.
