The Tesla Cybertruck has officially earned a five-star overall safety rating from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), confirming its strong crash performance more than a year after deliveries began in November 2023.
As part of the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), the NHTSA conducted multiple crash tests on the 2024 Cybertruck, evaluating its safety in frontal, side, and rollover scenarios. The Cybertruck received five stars in nearly all categories, with only a slight dip to four stars for the passenger in the frontal crash test and the rollover resistance test.
In the frontal crash test, which simulates a head-on collision at 35 mph, the driver’s safety received five stars, while the passenger obtained four stars. Tesla noted that the vehicle’s knee airbags did not deploy in this test by design.
However, the vehicle’s side crash test, which assesses performance in intersection and fixed-object collisions, resulted in a five-star rating for both the front and rear seats. The Cybertruck maintained its structural integrity in both the side barrier test, where a moving barrier struck the vehicle at 38.5 mph, and the side pole test, where it crashed into a rigid pole at 20 mph.
The only test where the Cybertruck did not achieve the highest rating was the rollover resistance test, where it received four stars. The NHTSA determined a 12.4% risk of rollover in a single-vehicle, loss-of-control scenario, though the truck remained stable during dynamic testing.
The tests were conducted in late 2024 by Applus+ Idiada Karco Engineering in Adelanto, California, with final reports released on January 15. The Cybertruck’s strong performance continues Tesla’s streak of five-star overall ratings across all its NHTSA-tested vehicles.
