Home charging boosts EV owner satisfaction – J.D. Power

The study found that all charger levels have seen an increase in reported problems.

The J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study found that home charging provides EV owners a more satisfying experience than public charging, despite the growing pains of the public charging infrastructure.

Additionally, the study revealed that Level 2 charging options, which 84% of home-charging EV owners prefer, provide faster charging speeds and higher owner satisfaction compared to Level 1 portable chargers.

Even though there has been an improvement in satisfaction with Level 1 chargers, owners still report a significant gap in satisfaction levels between Level 1 chargers and Level 2 permanently mounted stations and portable chargers. However, the study found that all charger levels have seen increased reported problems, particularly issues with internet connectivity and slow charging speeds. Moreover, bidirectional charging, which has gained interest among premium EV owners, has the potential to reduce energy costs and contribute to grid stability. However, nearly half of EV owners are unaware of utility programs that could enhance charging satisfaction and cost-effectiveness, indicating the need for increased awareness and education about these benefits.

While the survey looks at EV owners’ home charging experiences across all three charger segments, only Tesla maintained its top spot among Level 2 mounted charging stations for the past four years, with a score of 790. The Emporia ranked second with a score of 764, while GRIZZL-E ranked third with a score of 761.

The EVX Home Charging Study, now in its fourth year, is powered by a partnership with PlugShare– a leading provider of EV driver applications and research companies. The study aims to establish a baseline for measuring consumer satisfaction with the crucial elements influencing the overall experience of charging an electric vehicle at home, including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

Moreover, EV owners’ satisfaction levels are based on eight criteria. These include the fairness of retail price, chord length, charger size, convenience of winding/storing cable, charging cost, charging speed, ease of use, and reliability. The evaluation covers the charger’s performance and the owner’s experience. The survey included 15,617 respondents who own BEVs and PHEVs with model years ranging from 2018 to 2024, conducted between December 2023 and February 2024.
