GM recalls 461,839 vehicles over transmission issues

General Motors (GM) is recalling 461,839 vehicles due to a transmission defect that could cause the rear wheels to lock up, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall affects several models, including certain 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2021 Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe, and GMC Yukon.

The issue lies with the transmission control valve, which may fail in the affected vehicles. If the control valve fails, it can cause the rear wheels to lock up, creating a significant safety hazard for drivers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced this recall on Wednesday, signaling the severity of the defect and its potential for serious accidents.

To address the problem, GM has instructed dealers to stop delivering the affected vehicles immediately. To prevent further issues, GM will offer owners a free repair by installing updated transmission control module software.

In addition, the company is implementing a unique coverage program that will provide repairs for transmissions identified as containing the defective control valve.

This recall highlights the ongoing attention to vehicle safety, particularly in light of the widespread use of modern transmission systems and their complex electronic controls. GM is working quickly to mitigate the risk and ensure the safety of its customers.
