GM appoints Bryan Nesbitt to design chief as Michael Simcoe retires

After 42 years of dedicated service at General Motors, Simcoe is passing the torch to ensure the continuation of the brand's design legacy.

General Motors (GM) announced that Michael Simcoe, Senior Vice President of Global Design, will retire after serving the company for 42 years. Simcoe will remain in the role until July 1, 2025, to ensure a smooth transition. At that time, Bryan Nesbitt, Executive Director of Global Cadillac Design, will take his place.

Simcoe’s leadership has profoundly impacted GM‘s global design operations since he took on the role in 2016. He’s regarded as a visionary designer who always kept the consumer at the center of his focus. His keen eye for detail, forward-thinking approach, and leadership shaped the company’s vehicle portfolio as he guided the automaker’s transition to electric vehicles.

Under Simcoe’s tenure, GM’s design team created numerous award-winning vehicles, including the Cadillac Lyriq, GMC Hummer EV, and Chevrolet Equinox EV, which have solidified the company’s reputation as an innovation leader in the automotive space.

Stepping into Simcoe’s shoes is Bryan Nesbitt, who will officially take the reins later this summer. Nesbitt brings a wealth of experience to the role and is deeply familiar with all GM brands and the needs of their customers. His leadership has already yielded impressive results, particularly with Cadillac’s latest design concepts—the Opulent Velocity and Sollei—which were developed under his guidance.

Nesbitt’s extensive background within GM, paired with his hands-on leadership in design roles both domestically and internationally, positions him perfectly to lead the next phase of GM’s design evolution. His vision, combined with the talented team around him, promises an exciting future for the company as it continues to innovate and meet the shifting needs of consumers worldwide.
