Ford ships out new Tesla adapters to EV customers

Ford's new NACs adapters will increase consumer convenience by allowing consumers to use Tesla Superchargers across the U.S.

Ford is rolling out a new NACS charging adapter to its customers, allowing them to plug in their electric cars at Tesla Superchargers and non-Tesla charging stations nationwide. The new adaptor, the Lectron Vortex, has the exact specifications of Tesla’s but has a slightly different design. It will expand customers’ charging options, creating an easier, on-the-go charging experience.

Most non-Tesla electric vehicles (EVs) have a Combined Charging System (CCS) port. In contrast, Tesla has a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port. Last year, most major automakers, such as Stellantis and Honda, adopted NACS to join Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network. This significant decision will create a more convenient on-the-go charging experience for millions of consumers nationwide, potentially leading to more EV sales.

At the beginning of the year, Ford announced that eligible Ford EV customers could request a complimentary adapter. The window to request a replacement adapter has already been closed. However, customers who missed the opportunity to request a complimentary adaptor can still purchase it directly from Ford’s official site for $200.

In addition, in mid-October, Ford advised customers to stop using the complimentary Tesla Supercharger adapters they provided due to a malfunction that could cause sluggish charging time and potentially charging ports. Customers who receive faulty adapters will receive a free replacement unit.

These complimentary adapters are expected to begin shipping on October 31. However, they are delayed due to limited stock and high demand.

Despite the delay, Ford’s introduction of the Lectron Vortex adapter marks a significant step towards enhancing the charging infrastructure for electric vehicle owners. By enabling access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network, Ford increases convenience for its customers and fosters a more unified charging standard in the industry. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, initiatives like these will play a crucial role in promoting EV adoption and guaranteeing a smoother transition towards sustainable transportation.
