Ford says it will end production of its GT supercar, which has a price tag of $500,000, later this year. The company said it would offer a limited edition model to honor the occasion, with a design meant to pay homage to the vehicle’s racing history.
The Detroit automaker announced that the 2022 Ford GT LM Edition would be the last model of the third-generation car, and only 20 units would be produced. Production is expected to finish later this year, and deliveries will begin this fall.
“As we close this chapter of the road-going Ford GT, the GT LM Edition gave us a chance to inject even more heart and soul from a podium-finishing race car, furthering the tribute to our 2016 Le Mans win,” Mark Rushbrook, Global Director of Ford Performance Motorsports, said in a release.
The special edition pays tribute to the supercar’s win at the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours. It also harkens back to the famous French race in 1966, where Ford swept the podium to beat Ferrari, a moment memorialized in 2019’s Ford v. Ferrari.
Even to most Ford employees, the current generation GT Supercar was kept a secret until its surprise unveiling at the 2015 Detroit auto show. The company only produced 1,350 of the third generation GTs, which features a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine with 660 horsepower and a top speed of 216 mph.
Ford has not offered a starting price for the upcoming limited-edition model. Still, considering the pricing for the current GT Supercar model starts around half a million dollars, interested buyers can expect to spend at least that much, probably more.
