A recent explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas and a deadly truck attack in New Orleans have prompted investigations into possible terrorist connections. The two events have raised questions about the use of vehicles in attacks and potential links to extremist groups.
Yesterday, in the early hours of New Year’s Day, a driver crashed his rented pickup truck into a crowd that was celebrating in New Orleans’ French Quarter. He swerved around protective barricades, crashing the vehicle into pedestrians, and then opened fire into the crowd. The violent assault killed at least 10 people and injured over 35. The driver, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was a U.S. citizen from Texas. During the attack, he wore full military regalia and was killed in a shootout with law enforcement officers.
Investigators found an ISIS flag, weapons, and potential explosive device within the vehicle, as well as other possible explosive devices scattered throughout the French Quarter, prompting an investigation into the potential of this being part of a larger terrorist scheme.
Hours after the New Orleans attack, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded and burst into flames outside of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. The explosion killed one person and injured several individuals standing nearby. Initial investigations into the explosion suggest that it could be another terrorist attack. However, no suspects or motives have been confirmed.
The rental of the Tesla Cybertruck and the New Orleans pickup truck from the same company, Turo, raised suspicions about a connection between the two events.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Tesla’s senior leadership team also assisted with the investigation, providing officials with the Cybertruck’s route, surveillance footage from Tesla charging stations, and unlocking the truck after it auto-locked during the explosion.
The Cybertruck exploded fifteen seconds after arriving outside the glass doors of the Trump International Hotel. Investigators found gasoline canisters, fireworks, and a possible bomb inside the truck, confirming that these materials caused the explosion, not any mechanical issues with Tesla. However, it’s still unclear how the driver ignited the explosives.
Law enforcement will continue to probe further into the tragic New Orleans and Las Vegas events to determine whether the incidents are part of a large, coordinated terrorist plot.
