BYD overtakes Ford as the sixth-largest automaker

The automakers's trail-blazing growth reflects a monumental shift in the market.

BYD, the Chinese automaker, is quickly climbing the ranks and is on track to sell 4 million units this year. The company recently outsold Ford, pushing the legacy automaker out of the sixth-largest position in global sales. In fact, BYD is now only 10,000 units shy of overtaking Stellantis as the fifth-largest automaker in the world—a monumental shift in the auto market.

The third quarter of 2024 marked a record-breaking period for BYD. Between July and September, the company sold 1.13 million vehicles, a 38% year-over-year increase, making it their best quarter ever. During this period, BYD outpaced major industry players, including Tesla, and secured its position as the sixth-largest automaker globally. Ford, which sold approximately 40,000 fewer vehicles than BYD, dropped to seventh. For the January to September period, BYD delivered 3.25 million vehicles, just slightly behind Ford’s 3.3 million.

Looking ahead, the automaker is poised to end 2024 with over 4 million vehicles sold, possibly surpassing Ford’s annual total. This remarkable growth will solidify BYD’s position in the competitive automotive market, challenging traditional legacy brands and signaling the rise of Chinese automakers on the world stage.

As BYD surged, many traditional Japanese, European, and U.S. automakers faced declining sales during the third quarter. Toyota experienced a 4% drop in sales, moving 2.73 million vehicles, while Volkswagen’s sales fell 7% to 2.17 million. Hyundai also saw a 3% decrease, selling 1.77 million units, and Stellantis reported a significant 20% decline, delivering only 1.14 million units.

BYD’s rise, alongside the struggles of some long-established brands, signals a shift in the global automotive marketplace. With strong sales growth and a focus on innovation, BYD is rapidly becoming a dominant force in the industry, poised to disrupt the market and challenge the status quo.
