The Biden-Harris administration has announced $3 billion in clean port grants from the Inflation Reduction Act. This generous award will help electrify ports, reduce pollution, and create thousands of jobs nationwide.
This investment includes $147 million for the Port of Baltimore, supporting 2,000 local union jobs. Several institutions will receive awards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) across 27 states to modernize port infrastructure, reduce emissions, and create thousands of jobs. This is expected to boost the demand for American-made electric cargo handling equipment.
The Clean Ports program will help buy electric equipment for cargo handling, leading to a six-fold increase in demand for electric vehicles and machines. Since awarded ports will need to be updated, this offers a new market for dealers focusing on electric fleet vehicles and commercial trucks, as well as emission-free equipment like electric drayage trucks and charging stations. This program is expected to help create around 40,000 jobs nationwide, including about 6,500 in manufacturing, helping the U.S. economy grow.
In addition to Baltimore, major ports like Oakland, New Jersey, and Delaware are also receiving funding, which will help with long-term fleet electrification. Dealers working with electric cargo and commercial fleet options may see more demand as ports and transport fleets move to electric trucks and special machinery. This is a crucial step for dealers wanting to sell more green commercial vehicles.
This announcement supports the Biden-Harris Administration’s Justice40 Initiative and its aim for a zero-emission freight sector that boosts demand for electric fleet solutions in the automotive industry. The Clean Ports program offers dealers an excellent opportunity to expand into electric vehicle sales, take advantage of new infrastructure investments, and tap into the growing market for zero-emission transportation equipment.
