GM and TWG Motorsports launch powertrain development for Cadillac’s Formula 1 team

This exciting joint venture will establish Cadillac as a "full works" team and boost American growth in a predominantly European sport.

General Motors and TWG Motorsports have joined forces to develop cutting-edge powertrains for the Cadillac’s Foruma 1 team, marking a significant milestone in the brand’s motorsport ambitions.

Formed in 2024 as a partnership between the two companies, the Cadillac Formula 1 team is set to take its venture to the next level with the creation of GM Performance Power Units LLC. This new company is dedicated to positioning Cadillac as a “full works” Formula 1 team by building new vehicles and power units by the end of the decade. This project leverages GM’s expertise in hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) technology, sustainable fuels, and advanced software technology. The first vehicles are set to debut in 2026.

Leading the charge of this bold initiative is Russ O’Bleans, a seasoned industry expert with over 30 years of motor racing engineering experience. He’s renowned for his leadership and technical understanding and has been instrumental in several high-profile GM projects, including manufacturing the hybrid IMSA Cadillac and Corvette C8.R engines.

The development and testing of Cadillac’s Formula 1 engine technology is already in the works. While the GM units are being finalized and approved for competition, the team will continue to use Ferrari power units.

Performance Power Units LLC will open a dedicated facility for engineering the units near GM’s Charlotte Technical Center in 2026. This collaboration between General Motors and TWG Motorsports exemplifies their dedication to positioning Cadillac for long-term success in Formula 1 and advancing technology in one of the world’s most iconic motorsport arenas.
