3 practical steps leaders can take to support their employees during these uncertain times – Dr. Paul White

The COVID pandemic has lasted longer than many of us have expected. So what can leaders and managers do to encourage and support their teams? On today’s show, we’re pleased to welcome back Dr. Paul White, psychologist, best-selling author of “The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace”, and President of Appreciation at Work.

The pandemic had affected those who are working remotely and on-site in tremendous ways. The lack of predictability and certainty has increased stress and anxiety levels for people in their professional and personal lives. Whether you are an employer, manager, or supervisor, the pandemic has caused people to expend more emotional energy, and employers need to be aware of the atmosphere.

Part of the issue surrounding remote-work is that it is largely task-oriented. We miss out on the causal and informal camaraderie. The sterile and objective communications disregard personal connection. With this in mind, managers need to be proactive in reaching out to employees. Maybe they are facing struggles with child-care, income reductions, or sick relatives. It is important for employers to understand these adversities and support their employees and themselves with these three practical steps:

  1. Take care of yourself. You are not much help if you are stressed out and irritable.
  2. Focus on encouraging and supporting your team members. Help them get through the present challenges and stressors.
  3. Keep connected with what’s going on with them personally.
