2025 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid debuts with updated name, features, and electric range

Toyota continues to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency, combining powerful performance with cutting-edge technology and a sleek, stylish design.

Toyota continues to evolve its popular Prius line, unveiling the 2025 Prius Plug-In Hybrid, previously known as the Prius Prime. This name change is designed to simplify the differentiation between the standard hybrid Prius and its plug-in hybrid counterpart. The new model will feature a “PHEV” badge, indicating its Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle powertrain, and will be available in three trims: SE, XSE, and XSE Premium.

The 2025 Prius Plug-In Hybrid features Toyota’s fifth-generation Hybrid System, which combines a 2.0-liter gas engine with electric motor-generators under the hood. Drivers can expect a combined 220 horsepower and a manufacturer-estimated 52 MPG. The SE grade comes with a 13.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering an impressive 44-mile all-electric range. The XSE and XSE Premium grades have a 40-mile EV range.

Toyota’s new plug-in hybrid can operate in three distinct modes: EV, Auto EV/HV, and Hybrid Mode. Drivers can rely on all-electric power in EV mode, while the Auto EV/HV mode allows for a blend of electric and gas power depending on the driving conditions. The hybrid mode efficiently switches between the gas engine and electric motor as needed.

One of the standout features of the 2025 Prius Plug-In Hybrid is its enhanced convenience. Drivers can charge the battery using a standard household outlet, taking about 11 hours for a full charge or about four hours with a Level 2 charger. For those who cannot plug in, the vehicle operates seamlessly like a traditional hybrid. In addition, the Prius Plug-In Hybrid’s Predictive Efficient Drive system learns the driver’s routine routes and suggests the optimal times to let off the accelerator to maximize fuel efficiency.

Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 equips the 2025 Prius Plug-In Hybrid with pre-collision warnings, dynamic radar cruise control, and lane tracing assistance. For those opting for higher trims like the XSE Premium, additional features include:

  • An available JBL Premium Audio system.
  • A 12.3-inch touchscreen.
  • Even a solar roof option can charge the battery while the car is parked.

With the 2025 Prius Plug-In Hybrid, Toyota continues to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency, combining powerful performance with cutting-edge technology and a sleek, stylish design.
